Nottingham Forestupset the odds by triumphing over Manchester United; a goal by Bobby stokes giving the Saints their first major trophy and a memorable victory under the guidance of manager, Lawrie McMenemy.

Nottingham Forestreached the FA Cup final for the first time since their triumphant victory over Manchester United in the 1977 final. Arsenal was what stood between Nottingham Forest and the FA Cup trophy; however the Gunners beat them 1-0 in what proved to be an interesting encounter. Wayne Bridge was in outstanding form throughout the match for the Saints and it was a season which James Beattie was the top English goal scorer in the premiership.

Ipswich Town 2-2 Southampton

In what proved to be a thrilling encounter at Portman Road, the points were shared at the end of the match. All the action was end to end through out the match as both teams went for the victory. Ipswich twice went in front through goals by Richard Naylor and Owen Garvan, in what was Garvan’s first ever senior goal. The Saints levelled the score line on two occasions through Darren Powell and Dennis Wise as it finished doff all square.
